Traffic Insurance

Compulsory third-party liability

Traffic insurance — Compulsory Financial Liability Insurance — is required by law for every vehicle in Turkey. It covers the damage you cause to other people: their car, their property and their injuries. It does not cover your own vehicle.

What it covers

Damage to property
Damage you cause to another vehicle or to property such as walls, barriers and shopfronts.
Injury to people
Medical treatment costs for people injured in an accident you caused.
Permanent disability
Compensation where an accident leaves someone permanently disabled.
Loss of support
Compensation to the family of someone who dies in an accident you caused.

What to watch for

  • Damage to your own vehicle is not covered — that is what kasko is for.
  • Cover limits are set by the regulator and updated every year; the amount above the limit remains your responsibility.
  • Driving without a licence or over the alcohol limit gives the insurer a right of recourse against you, even though the injured party is still paid.
  • Driving without valid traffic insurance carries an administrative fine and the vehicle can be impounded.

Who it is for

Every vehicle owner in Turkey, without exception. It is checked at registration, at transfer of ownership and at roadside inspections.

What we add as a broker

The cover is identical everywhere — it is set by regulation — but the price is not, and it changes with your no-claims step, the vehicle and the region. Because the product is standard, this is the one place where comparison is purely about price, and we scan the market for you at every renewal.

Frequently asked

The cover is the same everywhere, so why does the price differ?
Insurers price the same cover differently depending on your claims history, the vehicle, your age and where the car is registered. Differences of several thousand lira for identical cover are common.
I have just moved to Turkey and bought a car. What do I need?
Traffic insurance is compulsory and must be in place before the vehicle is registered to you. Kasko is optional but strongly worth considering. We can arrange both together.
What happens if I let it lapse?
You face an administrative fine, the vehicle can be impounded, and any damage you cause comes out of your own pocket. There is no grace period worth relying on.
