Home Insurance
Fire, theft and optional extras
Home insurance covers the building and what is inside it. It is a separate product from DASK: DASK only pays for earthquake damage to the structure, and only up to a limit set each year. Home insurance is what covers fire, theft, water damage and your belongings.
What it covers
Fire and explosion
Damage to the building and its contents from fire, lightning and explosion.
Water damage
Burst pipes, leaks from the flat above, appliance failures.
Theft
Break-in and the damage caused during it.
Earthquake
Damage above the DASK limit, and damage to contents, which DASK does not cover at all.
Liability to neighbours
Damage that spreads from your home to a neighbouring flat.
Optional add-ons
Glass breakage, electronic devices, valuables, alternative accommodation, legal protection.
What to watch for
- Damage from neglected maintenance and long-standing damp is not covered.
- Items of unusual value must be declared separately; otherwise they are paid at a standard rate.
- Cover for a property left empty for a long period can be restricted.
- Underinsuring the property means claims are reduced in proportion — this is the single most common cause of disappointment.
- Some optional covers carry a waiting period.
Who it is for
Owners and tenants alike. Owners usually insure the building and contents; tenants insure their belongings and their liability to the landlord and neighbours.
What we add as a broker
The number that decides whether a claim is paid in full is the sum insured, and it is the number most often set too low. We work it out from construction cost per square metre rather than from what you paid for the flat, because those two are not the same thing.
Frequently asked
I have DASK. Is that enough?
No. DASK covers earthquake damage to the structure only, up to a limit set each year, and pays nothing for your contents. Fire, theft and water damage are outside it entirely.
I am renting. What should I insure?
Your own belongings and your liability. The building is the landlord's responsibility, but a burst pipe that damages the flat below can very much become yours.
How is the sum insured decided?
For the building, on current construction cost for the square metres — not the market price of the property. For contents, on what it would cost to replace them. We calculate both with you rather than guessing.
